Personal Material

Herbert Loebl received various awards during his lifetime and his personal collection includes photographs, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, and letters of congratulations regarding his many honours.

Loebl's personal papers also contain various items of ephemera relating to his life and early escape from Nazi Germany and a large collection of annotated scrapbooks spanning the years c.1900 - 2012. The scrapbooks contain photographs, ephemera from events, letters, newspaper clippings and other personal items. They cover a large range of topics including family events and interests, local events in Newcastle upon Tyne and Northumbria, events within the local Jewish community, vists to Herbert Loebl's hometown of Bamberg in Germany, Herbert Loebl's many awards and achievments and items relating to the many local organisations with which Herbert Loebl was involved during his lifetime.

Academic Records

Covers Loebl's academic career from his BSc in Electrical Engineering (awarded 1949 by King's College, Durham University, now part of Newcastle University), MPhil (awarded 1978 by Durham University), Phd (awarded 1985 by Newcastle University) and a series of lecture courses on Jewish history which Loebl delivered at Newcastle University in the 1980s. Contains certificates and degree ceremony photographs, early student notebooks on electrical engineering, research notes and source material relating to his doctoral thesis and Jewish history research.

Correspondence files and brochures for New Business North, incorporating the TechSearch initiative and Newcastle Technology Centre files. The collection also holds various research files relating to technology transfer in Europe and a number of governmental reports and publications on the subject.

Engineering Enterprises

Group papers, sales and marketing files, finance files and general correspondence files for the various engineering enterprises with which Herbert Loebl was involved in his lifetime.

The Joyce Loebl and Co files also contains a number of annotated scrapbooks which trace the history of Loebl's engineering enterprises through photographs, newspaper cuttings and other ephemera.

Documents collected by Edwin Wilcox

An assortment of typed documents, primarily speeches, concerning events in Russia. Most are connected to the Kerensy/Kornilov affair, and may be the primary material underlying a series of published articles. See WIL/2/5-9.

Printed material by Edwin Wilcox

Collection of essays, including drafts, offcuts, and unpublished material, by Edwin Wilcox. Primarily concerns incidents of the Russian Revolution and German politics. Also a scrapbook of newspaper clippings from the Newcastle Evening Chronicle and the Daily Telegraph [presumed by Wilcox] covers assorted topics ranging from 1899 to 1906, including the Boer War, the British military, foreign affairs, the British monarchy, and British politics.

Personal Correspondence

Correspondence to Edwin Wilcox. Included are a number of letters from the writer and journalist Edmund Clerihew Bentley, written from the Daily News and, later, the Daily Telegraph, on a range of political and social themes. Also includes a series of correspondence concerning the attempts to provide foreign language training for British troops during the Second World War. Other items include a selection of correspondence regarding family and personal affairs, a collection of postcards, and a selection of miscellaneous notes.
