Documents relating to William Bell Scott's work at Wallington

Mostly receipts, but includes letters and instructions to workmen, colour samples, a list of visiters to Wallington from Newcastle School of Art (1860) and a sketch for the painting 'The Building of the Castle'. Also includes a letters from Scott to Charles Edward Trevelyan from 1879, listing sitters for the paintings in the Hall, describing the planned work and proposing additions to the decoration.

Documents relating to William Clift (1775-1849), museum curator and scientific illustrator

Letter dated 15 Sep 1839 from Clift. Written at the Royal College of Surgeons, Lincoln's Inn Fields, to R McCormick Esq. Relates to the procurement and preparation of spirits for preserving animals and the acquisition of dissecting instruments. The recipient, Robert McCormick (1800-1890) was naturalist on H.M.S. Erebus on a voyage of discovery to the Antarctic under the command of Captain James Clark Ross. The ship sailed in September 1939 and returned in 1843. Obituary for William Clift from 'The Illustrated London News', with copies of an illustration and a photograph of a bust of Clift. Article about the Hunterian collection at the Royal College of Surgeons, London, entitled 'How a Great Museum Grew' by A. K. Page, from The Windsor Magazine.
