Watercolours and Sketches

When Leonard Evetts died in 1997, he left over 100 paintings in his back room studio. Many of these were sold, but a small number were retained by the Hatton Gallery at Newcastle University and kept within the archive.

Publications

A small amount of material relating to various published works by Leonard Evetts (including the posthumous publication Leonard Evetts: Master Designer).

Project Files

Leonard Evetts' private commission files span hundreds of commissions which range from paintings, the design and restoration of armorials, the design of ceremonial and religious objects, and the design and execution of over 300 stained glass windows in both religious and secular settings.

Organised by Evetts into separate project folders, these project folders typically contain early design sketches, final design drawings and layouts, commission correspondence and financial paperwork.

Lettering Studies

In 1938 Leonard Evetts published his book Roman Lettering, based on his study of the letters of the inscription at the base of the Trajan column. This went through eight reprints and established Evetts as an authority in historic calligraphy. Evetts was the son of a painting contractor who taught him signwriting and stimulated a lifelong interest in lettering and calligraphy. At the age of 18 he won a short scholarship to the Royal College of Art and this was followed by a three-year scholarship, in 1930-33, where he studied calligraphy under Edward Johnston and stained glass under Martin Travers. Throughout his lifetime Evetts continued to work in both of these distinct areas, often separately, but also often combining them in his stained glass window work.

Consultancy

This portion of the archive contains a number of consultancy commission project files relating to historical restoration and repair projects.
