John Murray founded the fiction magazine Panurge in 1984, which he edited with author David Almond until 1996.In 1988 he received the Dylan Thomas Award for a collection of stories.

Reiver Blues is a novel published in 1996. John Dory is a novel published in 2001, and it won a Lakeland Book of the Year Award. Jazz Etc is a novel published in 2003, and was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Murphy's Favourite Channels is a novel published in 2004, and it was a "Novel of the Week" in The Daily Telegraph.
