Biographical history

Hugh Lee Pattinson was the great grandfather of Sir Lawrence. Born 25 December 1796, he became an industrial chemist. He is known for patenting the Pattinson process of refining silver, as well as his daguerreotype photographs taken in 1840.

Daguerreotypes were an early form of photography, and amongst the images taken by Hugh Lee Pattinson are some of the first-known photographs of Niagra Falls and the Clifton Hotel. The collection of Pattinson's daguerreotypes are stored at Newcastle University Special Collections. They have been digitised so that they can be viewed online, but the originals can also be viewed upon request.
