Between 1980 and June 2012 a-n published a monthly magazine. Aimed at practicing artists, the magazine had a remit of advocacy and information sharing from the perspective of the artist. Features ranged from professional practice to current and political issues affecting the art world, as well as listings and reviews.

As part of a-n's remit to provide practical support for practicing artists, the organisation produced a range of publications. In addition to the a-n monthly magazine, from the 1990s they published a wide range of topic-specific books, guides, leaflets and other publications.

Year of the Artist

Year of the Artist was a nationwide scheme organised by the ten English Regional Arts Boards to fund residencies by artists in new and unusual settings. The scheme ran from June 2000 to May 2001 and had the slogan "1,000 artists in 1,000 places"

Anna Best Residency 2001

Relating to a Year of the Artist National Media Residency, hosted by a-n in 2001. Anna Best was invited to make a proposal in 2000, and after conversation with people working at a-n she proposed a surprise weekend away and a magazine.

Artists' Professional Development Network (APD)

The Artists Professional Development Network (APD) was a UK-wide intelligence and exchange forum for organisations that were proactively delivering and developing information, advice, training and professional development services for visual applied artists.

The organisation was founded in 2001 and was led by an independent steering group (later called management group). a-n was a founding member of this steering group, represented by Su Jones and Rebecca Farley from a-n during the period of these files 2001-2002

Professional Practice Programme (PPP)

This was a national programme to enhance professional practice in the visual arts instigated as a collaboration with the Northern Arts Academy (NAA) and supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

In 2002 a-n took on the delivery of the Professional Practice Programme from the National Artists' Association.

Networking Artists' Networks (NAN)

Networking Artists Networks (NAN) was launched in March 2004. It was intended to create an infrastructure and communications mechanism for visual artists across the UK, to facilitate exchange, dialogue and collaboration.
