Letter from Sir Lawrence to his mother, Mary Pattinson

Sir Lawrence discusses being alone in a Henry Harman plane, and having a small job 'looking after stores, in the flight'. He remarks on a Battalion's fight and how they were congratulated by Sir John French.

He comments that Johnny Fairbairn, a fellow student and oarsman when Sir Lawrence attended Jesus College, is doing well, flying a BE2C and hoping to get his wings soon.

Sir Lawrence discusses staying in the Ritz hotel in Paris which has allowed English officers to stay for ten francs a night. He comments on the ""cheeriness and enthusiasm"" the French show for the English Flying Corps, and describes the welcome he recieved.

He describes a message from Sir John French congratulating pilots and observers on recent fighting. Sir Lawrence remarks that the major approves of his 'gun mounting idea' and he hopes for great things to come of it.

Sir Lawrence discusses a parcel received from his mother including a tin of Devonshire cream, and remarks on plans to buy furniture for his sister-in-law Lina.

He writes about his patrol in bad weather, and the possibility of him being given a job as Flight Commander in England. He also remarks on being afraid and asks his mother to pray for him to have courage. He notes that he had paid to send a box of expensive chocolates to Diane, but suspects they were not sent .

Sir Lawrence discusses seeing the 'fire balls' which are now being used by the enemy and includes a small illustration. He comments on other conflicts that he has been in, and remarks that he has no news about coming home yet.

Included in the envelope is a newspaper cutting relating to Sir John French's commendation to the work of the Flying Corps.

Sir Lawrence discusses his flight in a Bristol Fighter Aircraft, and his stay at Peshawar aerodrome with Wing Commander Walser. He remarks on his travels and experiences at Kohat, Risalpur, Arawali, Miramshah, Fort Sandeman near Rasmah and Quetta.

Sir Lawrence comments on the RAF's plans to make a map of uncovered areas in Waziristan. He also details a flight along the Zhob during which his companion plane had to make an emergency landing.

Sir Lawrence ends the letter by expressing his hope that Mabel 'has solved the nurse problem', and informs her he will receive his mail when he arrives at Ambala.

He remarks on being made Air Aide-de-Camp to the King. He relates his travels and experiences at Cairo, Baghdad, Rutbah, Hinaidi, Iraq, Basra, Amman, Transjordan, Jerusalem, Palenstine, Bethlehem, Ramleh, Abusir, Heliopolis, Aboukir and Helouan.

Sir Lawrence comments on the social activities at Cairo including seeing a Royal Air Force pantomime. He closes by describing his travels to Port Said and the ship he has boarded.
