Alexandra Palace

In 2012-2013 Farrells were involved in masterplanning a revival of Alexandra Palace as part of a Heritage Lottery Fund bid. Alexandra Palace is a Victorian Grade II listed entertainment venue which was initially conceived of in 1859 as 'The Palace of the People.'

In 2012 it was reported that over half the building was derelict or out of use. The masterplan had distinctive objectives: to connect the edge of the building with the surrounding parkland, to make the building fully accessible by enhancing connectivity across the building from east to west, and from the south entrance. This involved improved access through Palm Court, West Hall, Great Hall, Ice Skating Rink, BBC Wing and Theatre. Finally, 3 key regeneration projects for distinct segments of the building were identified (a new hotel, upgrading the great hall, and opening up the derelict spaces, such as the theatre and the BBC wing). A public consultation process was included in development of the masterplan to rank the items of revival in terms of importance.

Lots Road Powerstation Site, Chelsea Waterfront

Terry Farrell and Partners began masterplanning the redevelopment of the Lots Road Power Station site for Hong Kong developer Hutchison Whampoa in 1996, in partnership with Circadian developers and Taylor Woodrow.

The final proposals involved converting the red-brick power station for residential use (Site A) and introducing a 37-storey tower, a 25-storey tower and several lower-rise blocks on the 4.6ha site (site B), which straddled the boroughs of Kensington & Chelsea and Hammersmith & Fulham.

Representatives of Kensington & Chelsea borough – as well as local residents – opposed aspects of the scheme, but deputy prime minister John Prescott granted it consent in 2006, following a public inquiry. The project finally broke ground in 2013 following further delays prompted by the 2008-9 financial crisis and preparatory work for the Thames Tideway Tunnel.

The first phase was completed in 2018. Formation Architects is targeting completion in 2024 for the power station itself.

Sir Terry's Farrell's Personal Secretariat Files

A collection of correspondence files and message book files accumulated by Sir Terry Farrell's personal secretariat rather than by the Farrell's office. As such they contain items of correspondence to and from personal business contacts, and organisations and interest groups Sir Terry was involved in personally, although they do also contain items related to projects undertaken by the Farrells practice. All items within this filing system are "personal professional", relating to architecture and other business matters.

Meetings and Practice Strategy

Management and Executive Board meeting files, together with some small additional files relating to practice organisation and development strategies during the period, and some files relating to practice membership of external organisations.
