Holy Trinity Church, Whitfield, Northumberland.

Leonard Evetts' project file relating to several projects at Holy Trinity Church and churchyard, Whitfield, Northumberland. The projects covered by the file are: the design and installation of the Blackett memorial window (1964), and the Blackett-Ord memorial in the churchyard (1963). Items relating to the design of a headstone (1979) do not seem to be included in this file.

The file contains detailed designs, sketches and commission correspondence.

Holy Trinity Church, Widdrington.

One large rolled design drawing relating to a commission for a memorial tablet (Spowart) in Hoptonwood Stone at Holy Trinity Church, Widdrington, Northumberland, installed 1990-1991.

A second file relates to designs for a chancel screen and windows for the same church. It would appear that these designs were not executed. This file contains rough sketches and one letter dated 1963.

Huddersfield Sports Centre

This file contains one photograph of a design for a plaque of the Huddersfield coat of arms, designed by Leonard Evetts for Huddersfield Sports Centre, opened 1973.

ICI Headquarters, Billingham, County Durham.

One large design relating to seven windows for new the office block at ICI Headquarters, Billingham, County Durham, designed and executed by Leonard Evetts and installed 1959-60. The design was based on the Roman days of the week: Sol, Luna, Mars, Mercurius, Jupiter, Venus, Venus, Saturnus.

Later work comprised a photomural design, 1961-62, which does not appear to be represented in this file.

Immaculate Heart RC Church, Sunderland.

Photograph of a monstrance designed by Leonard Evetts for, probably for the Immaculate Heart RC Church, Sunderland, completed in 1957. (A monstrance is a vessel used to hold an object of piety). The words 'church of the sacred heart' are written on the back, but it's possible that this was added later during preparation for the book on Leonard Evetts' work and is a slight mistake. There is also a photograph of what appears to be a cross, also assigned to this church. The details of this second commission are not known.

Leonard Evetts: Master Designer, 2001. Book.

This portion of the archive contains drafts of the text, draft lists of works, a small research file (largely containing guidebooks and so forth from churches Evetts' had produced work for) and a large number of photographs of various of Evetts' completed commissions.

Lettering Studies

In 1938 Leonard Evetts published his book Roman Lettering, based on his study of the letters of the inscription at the base of the Trajan column. This went through eight reprints and established Evetts as an authority in historic calligraphy. Evetts was the son of a painting contractor who taught him signwriting and stimulated a lifelong interest in lettering and calligraphy. At the age of 18 he won a short scholarship to the Royal College of Art and this was followed by a three-year scholarship, in 1930-33, where he studied calligraphy under Edward Johnston and stained glass under Martin Travers. Throughout his lifetime Evetts continued to work in both of these distinct areas, often separately, but also often combining them in his stained glass window work.

Magistrates Association.

Leonard Evetts' project file relating to the design of a coat of arms for the Magistrates Association, 1963.

The main file contains detailed designs, sketches, and commission correspondence. There are also two large lithograph versions of the design, housed separately due to their size.
