Consists of report expressing the reaction and view of affected families to the External Review of the Birmingham Children's Hospital NHS Trust: Report on Organ Retention. Includes responses received at a meeting between the Retained Organs Commission and the families on 7 December 2002, a summary of key issues and the current position at the Birmingham Children's Hospital.

This report proposed that people with long-term conditions could be encouraged to take an active part in their own care through self-management programmes and as key decision makers in their treatment process. Draws on research and practical experience in North America and Britain and makes recommendations aimed primarily at commissioning services, to reduce severity of symptoms and improve quality of life among sufferers.

This consultation document, following on from an earlier consultation Responsible Officers and their Duties Relating to the Medical Profession, the response to which was published in May 2009, aimed to set out proposed draft regulations and guidance relating to the roles and responsibilities of responsible officers. The draft regulations set out the legal framework for introducing responsible officers through the Health and Social Care Act 2008. The guidance expanded on the regulations and describes the role that responsible officers would play in supporting organisations and doctors to improve quality of care and support medical revalidation. This public consultation ran from 25 August 2009 to 25 October 2009.

Booklet by the British Medical Association reporting on proceedings at this event, in which Sir Liam was a speaker in the capacity of Senior lecturer in Epidiemiology at the University of Leicester. Discusses the health needs of ethnic minority populations as a whole, specifically the asian community.

Report co-written by Sir Liam and Peter Carr, Chairman of the Northern Regional Health Authority, proposing a strong and innovative strategic role for Regional Health Authorities following the Secretary of State for Health's announcement about the future of Regional Health Authorities in 1993.

This report was written in conjunction with Sir Liam's Report of a Census of Organs and Tissues Retained by Pathology Services in England and in response to public criticism at the unauthorised retention of children's tissue and organs at certain hospitals.

It drew together problems and concerns with the current system and made recommendations for change to ensure greater respect and compassion for the deceased and bereaved, clearer information on the medical purpose of such retention and greater participation in decisions by families, while preserving the need to continue the practice more appropriately for research and training needs.

Legislative reform was also recommended to require clear consent from families for retention and the need for an independent commission to be established to return organs and tissues to families where requested.

This report sets out a framework for strengthening the public health function of the Government's health strategy, and was a key component of implementing the NHS Plan, based on a programme of health improvement and service quality set out in the 1999 White Paper Saving Lives: Our Healthier Nation. This programme demanded stronger public health capability at every level to be effective. Sir Liam called for a wider understanding of health and well-being, better coordination and communication within the public health function and with other agencies, sustained community development and public engagement and and an increase of capacity and capabilities within the public health function.

Includes a template letter dated 28 March 2001 sent out to fellow health professionals with the report, acknowledging the contribution of Sir Kenneth Calman (Chief Medical Officer for England from 1991 - 1998) and others.

This report was produced at the request of the Secretary of State for Health in response to the withdrawal of an oral polio vaccine (OPV) in October 2000 in light of it containing bovine material and the negligible risks this entailed due to a rise in bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) outbreaks. It examined the circumstances leading to the withdrawal and makes recommendations on the wider issues raised by these events. These include the need for the Medicines Control Agency to review its procedures for checking validity of information supplied by pharmaceutical companies, a published summary of advice on vaccination production by the Committee on Safety of Medicines and clear communication to the public and health care professionals on the links between vaccine manufacture and BSE.
