An Organisation with a Memory

This report, produced with the assistance of safety experts from various fields, aimed to ensure lessons were learned from past adverse events in the NHS and reduce the risks to patients in the future. It identified key areas to enable the NHS to reform its approach to safety and made associated recommendations including an independent reporting scheme, a programme of learning into adverse events and enhanced learning from error.

An Investigation into the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) Response to Requests for Late Abortions

This report, commissioned by the Secretary of State for Health, was in response to claims made by The Sunday Telegraph that women beyond the legal limit for abortion in England were being referred abroad by the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS). It investigated the handling of late abortion cases by this registered charity and service provider.

Found that BPAS's ability to provide abortion and reproductive counselling and services had not been compromised and made a number of best practice recommendations for dealing with late gestation abortion cases, developing protocols for late term abortion counselling and improving early access to services.

An Independent Review of the UK Response to the 2009 Influenza Pandemic

Report by team chaired by Dame Deirdre Hine to review the appropriateness and effectiveness of the UK strategy for responding domestically to the H1N1 Swine Flu influenza pandemic and make recommendations for future planning.

Includes covering letter to Sir Liam from Dame Deirdre enclosing a copy of the report and congratulating him for making sure the UK was prepared and knew the risks of a pandemic.

Alcohol: Advice and Information for Children and Young People

Consultation example for discussion of a report intended for children and young people regarding their relationship with alcohol. Includes Sir Liam's draft guidance, myths and realities of underage drinking and further information and sources of advice.

Part of Governments Consultation on Children, Young People and Alcohol, which ran for 12 weeks seeking the views of young people, carers, parents and other interested parties and closed on 23 April 2009. Sir Liam's condensed draft guidance featured on page 6.

Advancing Health: Examples of the Work of the Chief Medical Officer for England 1998-2010

This report contains a detailed overview of the health issues, campaigns and developments Sir Liam was involved in over the course of his 12 years in office, including those championed through his annual reports and special reports. It includes the background to these issues, Sir Liam's contribution to debate and reform and the advances these contributions contributed or directly led to.
