Press Cuttings (1913-1937)

Scrapbook labelled 'Press cuttings', containing newspaper and magazine cuttings about the Northumberland Handicrafts Guild, taken chiefly from the local press, exhibition invitation cards, exhibition leaflets, exhibition listings, and a programme for the Annual Exhibition, July 1923. The volume also contains cuttings of advertisements for Northumberland Handicrafts Guild Exhibitions which were placed in the local press, with notes about the size and cost of the advertisement.

The Northumberland Handicrafts Guild was formed at a meeting held on 9th June 1900 and its aim was to promote the study of handicrafts in the County of Northumberland. There was a particular emphasis on embroidery, woodwork, basket work, leather work and weaving. Prominent members of the committee include Thomas Edward Hodgkin, Richard George Hatton, Ella Pease and Miss Noble.

This archive comprises of the annual reports of the organisation 1900 - 1936, together with a small collection of other constitutional and committee records. The collection includes also accounting material for the period 1930 - 1947 and press cuttings related to the activities of the Guild. Part of the archive is dedicated to mementos and the embroidery work of Margaret Scott, a member of the Guild in the early 1900s.

Materials related to Margaret Scott, a member of the Northumberland Handicrafts Guilt. The materials were donated by Ms D. M. Carr, Margaret Scott’s granddaughter. The items donated include: Embroidered tablecloth; 3 Photographs of Margaret Scott and family; An embroidery sampler with a list of the types of embroidery styles; A certificate issued by NHG to Margaret Scott for an exhibit of embroidery issued in 1912; An Evening Class Instruction Certificate of merit by the Education Committee of the County Council of Northumberland to Margaret Scott issued 1907; A letter from Ms Carr to Dr Melanie Wood regarding the life of her grandmother, Margaret Scott; A letter from Ms Laura Gillott (Robinson Library Special Collections Team) to Ms Carr regarding an exhibition titled ‘Extraordinary Embroidery: The Northumberland Handicrafts Guild and Margaret Scott’.
