Correspondence with Lady Ferguson Hannay

Correspondence regarding the clean air campaign, her husband's work towards this, causes of cancer (diesel fumes and air pollution), her own position as an author and historian not a medical professional, "Defume" speech by her husband. Attached is Lady Fergusson Hannay's letter to the Daily Telegraph "Tobacco or Diesel" (this refers to her husbands work and Percy Stock's figures on lung cancer in rural and urban areas). Pybus drafts replies regarding his own work and Sir Walter Fergusson Hannay's work and use of it in the aim for clean air (this is drafted on the back of a National Geographic Subscription). An obituary for Fergusson Hannay in "Vital Statistics" is available. Pybus' replies also suggest he is making progress with the campaign locally, he also mentions his correspondence with Vauxhall regarding an exhaust filter. A later letter from Fergusson Hannay shows Pybus sent her a paper which she suggests he should send to Gerald [Watson?] M.P. and Rupert Spier M.P. (Spier is linked to noise pollution), her husband was chair of the Noise Abatement Society. Lady Fergusson Hannay goes into detail about her husbands death, her own personal situation and experiences, including how her dog reacts to living in London.

Correspondence with Lewis

Letters have newspaper clippings attached concerning the publicity for Clean Air Campaign and who is involved regionally, particularly in the media and local press. Lewis is based in Whitley Bay and has connections with the Councillors there. Lewis also recommends replies to articles in national newspapers which he encloses. Included in the file is a invitation from the Whitley Bay Afternoon Towns Women's Guild to talk on Clean Air sent on by Lewis.

He also mentions the work on British natives that have emigrated to South Africa and New Zealand and have been diagnosed with lung cancers. Tables from research are available. Correspondence with Mr. Spiers

Correspondence regarding loaning "Cancer and Atmospheric Pollution" and asks if Mr. Spiers intends to take the matter further. Mr. Spiers replies saying he is not interested enough to accept the loan and he wouldn’t be able to pursue the efforts for clean air.

Correspondence with Mrs. D. Danford

Letters regarding Pybus' article in the Newcastle Journal about lung cancer. Danford explains her own situation and includes a cutting of a draft excluder she has used and replaced in her home which has no open fires. Pybus sends a response in sympathy with her situation.

Correspondence with Percy Stocks

Correspondence regarding Pybus' interest in Stocks' work on benzpyrene (which was sent to Pybus via Dr James Grant, Medical Officer of Health, Gateshead). Pybus requests Stocks' figures and asks about further research. Stocks' replies with more information about his work and explains he is busy with several jobs. Pybus replies to this with his opinion and also sends a reprint of "Cancer and Atmospheric Pollution".
