Letters and papers regarding Bertrand Russell

Relates to Russell's conviction under the Defence of the Realm Act during World War I.
Includes extracts from a speech by Russell given at Cardiff on 6th July 1916, newspaper cuttings, copies of correspndence between Russell and representatives of the War Office, a leaflet of a syllabus of lectures by Russell, a leaflet entitled Bertrand Russell & the War Office: A Personal Statement published by the Council for Civil Liberties, correspondence between Charles and Herbert Samuel and a pamphlet entitled The Administration of the Military Service Act, 1916 .
An accompanying envelope is annotated in Mary's hand.

Includes a postcard of Charles and Mary, a menu and bill for the reception, letters of congratulations to Mary and Florence, a poem written for Florence by Hugh, letters from various recipients accompanying wedding presents, a cutting of silk from the dress worn by Florence to the wedding and letters from Mary describing her first visits to Elland and Wallington.

Letters and documents relating to Charles' appointment as Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland

Includes copy of a letter to Ramsay MacDonald accepting the position, letters of congratulations from various correspondents with copies of Charles' responses, a typescript list of the Lord Lieutenant's duties, arrangements for Clerk of the Lieutenancy, a scheme for the establishment of a Territorial Army Assocation for Northumberland and a copy of the London Gazette which includes an announcement of the appointment.
